Carpentry Workshop
Grizzly Bear Cutting Board Class

Where: Alaska Industrial Hardware Store; 5655 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage

 

In this fun class we will use a band saw to cut out a grizzly bear shaped oak cutting board. We then use a router to finish the edges and hand sander to smooth all surfaces. The final step is to apply a walnut oil finish to all surfaces and it’s ready to use.

 

Age: Adults

Number of Students: Class size is restricted to 3 students

Tools and Materials: All tools are provided. You do not need to bring any tools. Oak material, template, glue, and walnut oil finish will be provided.

Bandsaw Jewelry Box

Kerf Bent Box Fundamentals

Class Description: Layout and cut bending kerfs then bend a small box using hot water to relay the kerf "hinge" wood.

Wood Framed Kitchen Trivot

In this class we will be making a wooden maple frame to hold a 12" square ceramic tile

Wall Mounted Coat Rack

Class Description: In this class we will make a wall hung coat rack. We’ll use a table saw to cut the rack to the length you need and then use a router to finish the edges. We then finish with spar urethane and install the coat hooks.

Number of Students: Class size is restricted to 4 students

 

Tools and Materials: All tools are provided. You do not need to bring any tools. Oak material will be provided. You need to bring coat hooks of your choice. A good source is Hardware Specialties.

Epoxy Application to Furniture

Time: 10 - 11 a.m. lecture on epoxy application for our monthly meeting.

Monthly Meeting and Class Description:

1. The format for this class is different than that of our other classes. The first hour will be our monthly meeting and Ron Werli from Eagle River Sawmill will give a free lecture to include the following topics:

~ Purchasing the wood for your project.  A brief discussion on preparing yourself to better insure the moisture content of your purchase is actually good to work with, don't just take the sellers word for it. Invest in a moisture meter. 

~ Cracks and splits provide places to add color to the project. Spalted woods enhance the natural beauty in you're project.

~Preparation of your wood slab for epoxy.

~ The different brands of epoxies and the types and their use.

~ Sealing your wood.

~Sanding between coats of expoxy.

~Flood coats

~ The steps to make the hi gloss finish, a matte finish

~ Cure Time

~Repairing scratches, dents, and chips.

~ Rubio Monocoat. A high quality, easy to apply plant based hard wax wood finish.

2. From 11 t0 4 p.m. students will either observe the epoxy application process, or will apply epoxy to their projects.

Age: 16 years and up

Number of Students:  Attendance is restricted to 10 audience observation participants; and to, 4 additional students with actual projects. The project for the epoxy application will be the coffee table built on the class of Dec 5th. 

Tools and Materials: All tools and materials will be supplied for the epoxy.

You must be a ACWA member to attend this class.

Cost: Students who are observers will pay a $30 registration fee. Those with projects will pay $125 which includes all materials and tools.  Sign up on this website.

Japanese Kumiko-
jigs and asa-no-ha pattern

Class Description: On Saturday, students will build their own jigs to take home and then prepare the kumiko stock for use on the project.  On Sunday, the class will cover the design, layout and construction of a basic Asa-no-ha pattern. Great mix of power tool and hand tool techniques.

Age: Adults

 

Number of Students: Class size is restricted to 3-4 students

 

Tools and Materials: Wide chisel (1" or larger works best); small block plane (eg. Lie-Nielson 102); Bench plane.

Cost: $125.00,  Includes shop fee, materials, and instructor.

Coffee Table

Date:To Be Announced

Where: Alaska Industrial Hardware Store; 5655 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage

 

Class Description: We will be constructing a coffee table out of wood. It will have a wooden apron that will have mortise and tenon joints at each corner. Two choices are available for the top- a flat top or a live edge. The top will be then expoxied the following week at our monthly meeting.  You must sign up as a participant if you want to apply epoxy to your table top. 

 

Age: 16 and up

Number of Students: Class size is restricted to 4 students

Tools and Materials: All tools will be provided. You have the choice of selecting your own material for the top or oak will be provided.  Please let us know what type of wood you'd like for the apron and legs.

Cost for Members: $20.00 shop fee, material fee to be determined; Instructor fee: $50.00
